Uses of weblogs for educators
Knowledge sharing, networking
Educators can keep notes on their own teaching, they can write about their topics and thoughts on related matters. They can link to and comment on news related to their topics. Through weblogs they can also discuss new devolpments in their field with colleagues around the world.
Furthermore Weblogs can be used by educators as a knowledge management tool.
Uses of weblogs for courses
Course weblog
Teachers can use weblogs to post news about the course and to provide course materials, suggested readings and exercises. It becomes much easier for students to access materials and readings. They can subscribe to the blog via RSS and are steadily informed about new materials and current developments.
Group weblog for courses
Teachers can post materials and links to extra materials including live newsfeeds and use weblogs to organize in-class discussions. Students and instructors can also provide summaries of readings and links to related material. In this way weblogs become a common knowledge repository for the class.
Course network
Students and teachers write their own weblogs. The weblogs are connected through blogrolls and RSS-aggregation. Teachers post materials, suggested readings and exercises on their weblogs. Students post their thoughts and comments and summaries of the readings and related links to their weblogs. A decentralized information space between educators and students is established.
Uses of weblogs for students
Learning diary
Students use their weblogs to keep personal notes on their learning and their thoughts on relevant topics. They collect additional links and materials and make them available to their colleagues. They can discuss relevant topics with other students either by the comment-function of the weblog or via trackback. Teachers can also comment on exercises and the student’s learning progress.
Cyberportfolio
Students use weblogs for documenting their work. The weblog can also be used as a portfolio for job applications.
